International Day of Peace September 21st

Posted by: admin  :  Category: mind body

September 21st 1982 was the First International Day of Peace.

This year on September 21st in hundreds of countries, people are planning to create a more peaceful world.

Peace One Day is one organization trying to create a Global Truce on Peace Day; A world wide intentional event to bring people together through art, sport, music, dance and meditation. People will send a call for an end to violence, in every country, in every city and home.

This is a lofty goal, but not impossible. Through small and large acts we can all send out Peace, Love and intention for a more tolerant world.

Find a way this Friday to celebrate Peace.

Take one minute to be grateful for every blessing you have in this life, and send  Peaceful thoughts out into the world.

As we move closer to a global village in every way, we need to remember that a village is made up of people  just like you. Every thought and action towards creating a more peaceful and loving world will be amplified.

Be a part of the world’s biggest Peace Movement. It doesn’t matter how big or small your action is, just do it!

In the words of John Lennon; All we are saying is Give Peace A Chance.

If someone thinks that love and peace is a cliche that must have been left behind in the Sixties, that’s his problem.

Love and peace are eternal.

Hungry No More _ ONE Campaign_ Take action now!

It  is really overwhelming watching the hunger crisis unfold on the other side of the world, while here in Canada we are so insulated from anything even close to this. Hungry No More form the ONE campaign uses pop culture icons to appeal to our senses and asks us to sign this petition;

Dear World Leaders,

The famine in Somalia could kill 750,000 in the coming months, and tens of thousands have already died. When you meet at the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in November, you have the opportunity to break the cycle of famine and ensure people are hungry no more. Lives are in your hands. Please keep the promises you have made to the 2 billion poor people who depend on farming for their livelihoods.

From what I have read and heard it is already too late. When cholera and disease that always come with the wet season hits these people their chance of survival will be slim. They are malnourished, and even with food aid now they will die. Thousands of children everyday day are dying.

My “Western Guilt” surely gets to me. I feel like I honestly try to work towards food security in my own backyard, still I feel helpless when it comes to the unimaginable human tragedy that exists in the world today – October  8th 2011.

The stock market fluctuates, Occupy Wall Street – and other streets- rages on. Is this the revolution?  I want to believe things could change.

Is this the beginning ? Or will we all continue with our blinders on. What do our  “important” schedules and appointments today mean while while millions of people around the world live on less then $3 a day and  struggle to exist.

I consciously send out love and peace to all the people of the world who do not know the security I take for granted everyday.

This Thanksgiving – which in Canada is this weekend – Please send your thoughts and prayers to the most vulnerable people. Do everything in your power to try and help them. Everything you do can make a difference. Give your time, your money and your attention to this issue. These are our brothers and sisters and what we do to them we do to ourselves.

gifts that last

Metro Vancouver has a new campaign to curb excess garbage created over the holiday season.

This time of year is a retailers delight, with many businesses making the majority of their sales in the month of December. Our consumer culture reaches a crescendo at holiday time.  Increasingly we see “green” gift ideas, and while supporting local businesses, buying  ethically fairly traded products is a good choice, this new campaign has come along to remind us there is another option.

The website gives ideas for low waste gifts. Some idea’s include giving the gift of experiences; classes and memberships, a new soccer ball or a bike,  dinner out, tour local light displays, visit a historical site or experience a live presentation of some kind.

Be creative and have fun; make a wreath from things in your backyard, cut out paper snow flakes,  look through thrift shops for treasure, give a family heirloom to a loved one, or offer to fix a broken step or paint a room for a friend or family member who may not be able to do it themselves.

The gift of time is often the most welcome of all.  What is more valuable then memories we create with the people we love?

This holiday season if you find a way to give more of yourself you will be richer for it.

Eco blogs and websites around the world are reporting on the climate talks wrapping up today in Cancun, Mexico.

World leaders have gathered for the Sixteenth Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP16) and the Sixth Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties of the Kyoto Protocol (CMP6).

big tree

Canada is falling short of the measures set out in Kyoto and with the United States refusal to accept the treaty, the progress is slow going.  Even with dialogue between the two nations continuing Canada is one of the worst offending countries when it comes to CO2 emissions.

Many countries would like  the Kyoto Protocol to be extended and built upon. The present agreement expires in 2012, with little over one year until then, the movement needs a solid action plan in place.

Island nations are on the font lines of the Global Warming disaster. They are not the only ones who face catastrophic consequences if climate change is not stopped, they have the unfortunate role of  “the canary in the coal mine.”

A Canadian activist group called Evolve Love have live coverage of the meeting and their reporting indicates a strong activist presence at the talks.  Some  groups represented there are the Youth Climate Action Network, The Indigenous Environmental Network, and the people from 350.org

Will the world leaders have the courage to make this a priority? Switching to renewable energy, creating green jobs, and implementing stringent environmental protection laws is the only way to achieve the goals of these treaties and accords.

The Evolve Love promotional material asks how we can see the climate crisis as a love story?

The answer is, it’s up to each of us.

Are we willing to make the changes we need ?  The wealthiest nations have the power in our hands.

Make a change.
