Old pallets get a second life!

This is a great short video that shows many uses for old pallets. The Canadian Wood Pallet and Container Association links to this video, showing old pallets that have been made into many beautiful and useful items; including furniture, decking, and even homes.

Trash Talking

While reading the news this week, I came across an article on Madrid’s Beach Garbage Hotel

The hotel is made of garbage found on beaches around the world. It was created by artist Ha Schult, in an attempt to raise awareness about the state of the Oceans, the garbage that is dumped into the Oceans of the World and garbage that washes ashore on every beach across the planet.

Schult speaks about it ” “I created the Beach Garbage Hotel because the oceans of our planet are the biggest garbage dump,”

Most people are award of the Pacific Garbage Patch that exists and grows daily. The plight of the worlds Oceans are only one factor a long line of environmental destruction that is a result of our mass consumption and disposable lifestyle.

I was on The Story of Stuff website today and saw the newest instalment in their campaign The Story of Electronics.

The fact remains that we in North America use way more then our share of resources and create an exceptional amount of garbage per citizen.  Corporations are largely to blame, along with our governments that allow the production of mass amounts of “stuff” with no thoughts as to the end of life requirements of said stuff.

Some governments in Europe and even China are taking steps to force manufacturers to take responsibilty. The fact remains if we didn’t buy into the mass consumer culture in the first place we wouldn’t have these problems.

We need to make informed decisions when we make purchases.

Fairly traded products and closing the loop from the manufacturing all the way to the disposal of garbage needs to be on the agenda of every consumer, government and corporation in the world.

The problems that exist today are a direct result of our actions. We can change things by making sustainable choices and only buying things that can be disposed of ethically.

Things have to change and it has to start with each  of us.

new delhi

I saw the above picture today on facebook and had to add it to this post! Amazing!

3000 students and teachers at the Ryan International School in New Delhi ask world leaders to not ignore the “elephant in the room” — climate change.

The team at 350.org have inspired  people around the world to create art that is visible from space.

This picture is only the latest in a series of large art instillation’s that have been developed around the world to draw attention to the issues of climate change.

This photo was the most recent example of the 350 EARTH event in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. It’s the image of a person standing on the roof of their house as waves threaten to submerge it. This is the view from 300 miles above the earth.

As another  UN Climate talk is set to  begin next week in Cancun, the  message to global leaders is  that the time to act on climate change is now. We do not have time to waste!

2005_1120image0013

One day not too long ago I was walking past the local elementary school and noticed something in the tree. It was a wooden sign nailed on the tree that read “AS YOU ARE”

I looked at the other tree’s around me and noticed something, more signs, they all included messages. Who were they intended for? Who put them there? It turns out that these questions don’t really matter. The only thing that matters was that I saw them, other people saw them and will see them.

These messages are for everyone.

They read; “AS YOU ARE”

“ADORED”

“BELIEVED IN”

“VALUED”

“RESPECTED”

“AS YOU ARE”

What better message to give or receive?

Peace&Love

Now that the season of gardening is in full swing, many of us are spending long days and evenings in our backyard green oasis.  Many gardens have art, fountains and bird feeders, what if the art you choose to ad to your garden  could make it even greener?  Have you heard of Water Works Garden Sculpture ?

While volunteering at Epic this May, I  discovered these wonderful pieces of art made of recycled materials such as musical instruments , copper, silver, brass and glass collectibles.  Made  in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada!

The artists name is Douglas Walker. While browsing his site and looking at many of these amazing one of a kind pieces I also checked out his blog , where I saw some more photo’s of his shop and work.

With a few weddings and many warm nights ahead I think that I may consider one of these for gifts this summer.

These pieces are truly Eco art, beautiful, functional and like nothing you have seen before! Be sure to check out his upcoming festival dates to check some out in person, you will not be disappointed!

Our rooftop garden is growing well!

It is amazing just how much you can grow in a small space! We have had very warm weather for the past few weeks and our garden has been loving it!

There is something satisfying  about eating food you have grown yourself.

I am looking forward to eating some of these peas, and the tomatoes we planted too!

Our garden has lots of these little guys as well. I guess they are helping to keep the aphids away!
